A prep route into a wider school
Bancroft’s Prep starts at seven and offers a co-educational junior stage in Woodford Green. The public Good Schools Guide profile describes a strong connection to the senior school. Since September 2026 it sits within the Bancroft’s Family of Schools, alongside St Aubyn’s and Woodford Green Prep.

Check the current seven-plus assessment and senior-transfer terms. The family-of-schools arrangement does not make the three prep campuses interchangeable or guarantee a senior place from every member school.

Forest offers a primary-age route within a co-educational all-through school. Its setting beside Epping Forest distinguishes it from the City options in this guide; the public Good Schools Guide profile also describes outdoor learning for younger pupils. Compare the prep timetable and campus rather than treating the all-through profile as a primary-only review.
Before you decide
Check the Reception, seven-plus and occasional-place routes separately. Ask which facilities are used by prep pupils and what conditions govern transfer to the senior school.

St Aubyn’s remains a distinct school and campus within the Bancroft’s Family of Schools formed in September 2026. That makes it a relevant comparison for families considering a Woodford prep education while keeping a range of senior destinations in view. Shared governance is not the same as an identical school experience.
Before you decide
Ask for the current admissions policy, latest ISI report and the precise terms of the Bancroft’s Senior School Pathway. A conditional pathway should not be read as an automatic offer.
Woodford Green Prep is another distinct campus in the new Bancroft’s family. It is worth comparing directly with St Aubyn’s and Bancroft’s Prep because the schools retain their own staff, curriculum and character. The choice should turn on the child’s daily experience and onward options, not simply the shared group name.
Before you decide
Check the relevant nursery or primary entry point and current senior-destination support. Ask how the new conditional senior pathway works alongside applications to other schools.
The school remains a separate 3–11 institution in the family formed in September 2026. The new senior pathway is conditional.

A City school with a choral identity
St Paul’s Cathedral School offers a very different setting from the outer-east-London preps: a central City location and an established choir-school identity. Its age range extends to thirteen, so the primary years form part of a longer prep education. Ordinary day places and chorister routes need to be considered separately.
Before you decide
Ask about day-pupil admissions, chorister eligibility and any boarding commitments. Test the City commute at school-run time; this guide groups the City with East for navigation.

Ask who notices when a child is struggling, how additional learning needs are supported and what a normal week looks like.
Look at work, talk about homework and find out which clubs pupils can actually attend. Repeat the journey at school-run time.
