The numbers are a reading order, not quality scores. The Good Schools Guide is used only where its public profile is available; school information and ISI material fill identified gaps. Every school is within Greater London.
Bancroft’s offers a co-educational senior route in Woodford Green. It is a useful comparison with Forest for families seeking an independent school in the northeastern part of Greater London. The school’s published 2025 ISI report and public Good Schools Guide profile provide two different perspectives on its provision.
Before you decide
Read the external eleven-plus route carefully alongside the new family-of-schools pathways. Compare bursaries, travel and subject choice; the Essex postal address does not place the school outside the London Borough of Redbridge.

Forest’s location beside Epping Forest gives this shortlist a campus-based alternative to the central City schools. Its public Good Schools Guide profile describes a co-educational all-through school with a broad offer. For senior applicants, focus the comparison on the actual eleven-plus and sixth-form programmes.

Use the London Forest School admissions pages; there are similarly named schools elsewhere. Ask about the daily timetable, transport and the balance between academic and wider commitments.

A central London boys’ school
City of London School brings an urban day-school option to a list otherwise centred on Woodford and Waltham Forest. Its public profile starts at age ten, which is an important difference from standard eleven-plus entry. Its riverside City location makes transport a central part of the decision.

Confirm which entry points are available for the intended cohort. Compare the actual journey from home, bursary arrangements and the transition into an academically selective environment.

CLSG adds a girls’ senior-school choice in the heart of the City. It is useful for families comparing a highly urban school routine with the larger outer-London campuses. The public Good Schools Guide profile covers the senior 11–18 phase, keeping it distinct from any separate preparatory arrangements.
Before you decide
Check the admissions assessment, bursary process and sixth-form entry rules. Walk the Barbican route with your child; the practical journey can be less obvious than the map suggests.

Normanhurst offers a co-educational senior phase through age sixteen rather than an on-site sixth-form route. Its March 2025 ISI report identifies both junior and senior sections and describes the school’s family-owned group structure. It broadens the comparison beyond large all-through independent schools.
Before you decide
Read the 2025 report and ask about GCSE options, learning support and destinations after sixteen. Include the next school or college transition in the decision from the outset.

Ask who notices when a child is struggling, how additional learning needs are supported and what a normal week looks like.
Look at work, talk about homework and find out which clubs pupils can actually attend. Repeat the journey at school-run time.
Keep several realistic choices rather than treating any Top 5 as an offer list.
