AI in London planning faces Assembly scrutiny
The Assembly is examining how artificial intelligence is being used in London planning. Its investigation asks about practice and safeguards; it is not a finding that a council has broken the rules.

THE LONNOW GUIDE
London technology is not only a startup story. It includes the connection in your flat, the accounts you rely on, the software used at work and the skills you choose to study. Start with the task and the risk, then decide which tool is worth learning or buying.
An editorial decision guide, not a ranking. Choose the option that fits your circumstances, then check the relevant official information before committing.
| Task | Evidence worth collecting | Question that prevents a poor decision |
|---|---|---|
| Connect a home | Address-level availability, provider terms and installation details | Is this coverage information or an explanation of a current outage? |
| Protect important accounts | Recovery options, separate credentials, updates and a tested backup | Could you recover safely if your phone or laptop disappeared? |
| Trial an AI workflow | A bounded task, authorised data and a way to verify the result | Who checks the output and is this information permitted in the tool? |
| Choose a course or career project | Prerequisites, assessed work and a relevant finished example | What will you be able to demonstrate beyond a certificate title? |

For a new home, compare connectivity at the address rather than assuming a whole district has the same service. Ofcom’s checker distinguishes mobile coverage by provider from broadband availability and lets readers explore postcode results. It does not report every maintenance problem or current outage; that is a separate question for the provider. Availability, reliability in the rooms you use and the terms of a contract are different parts of the decision.
Write down what the connection needs to support: video appointments, work calls, study, shared household use or large file transfers. Ask about installation, equipment, the length of the agreement and what happens if the service disappoints. An advertised maximum speed is not a complete description of how the service will fit your home. On the move, use the dedicated Tube-connectivity guide rather than assuming a signal throughout an entire journey.

Email deserves early attention because it is often the route used to recover other accounts. The National Cyber Security Centre recommends a strong, separate email password, two-step verification, software updates, password management and backups. Apply the basics to the accounts that would be difficult to lose: banking, work, cloud documents and the services tied to your phone.
A useful recovery test is simple: if this device stopped working, could you access the account and the important files another way? Record recovery arrangements securely and check that the backup contains what you think it contains. Buying another security app is not a substitute for understanding the provider’s recovery process. Our safety guide brings the practical steps together without promising that any product prevents every incident.

Choose one bounded task, such as organising non-sensitive notes or producing a first draft that a person will verify. Decide what a useful result would look like and which errors would make it unsafe to use. Compare the output with the material you supplied, not just with how confident it sounds. Keep responsibility with the person or organisation using the result, especially when the work affects someone else.
The ICO’s AI guidance connects the use of personal information in AI systems with data-protection principles and explains the importance of communicating assisted decisions. Before uploading customer, employee or client material, establish the organisation’s authorised process and the provider’s handling of that information. A convenient prompt box is not evidence that you have permission to share the data or that the output is accurate.

For study, compare prerequisites, modules, assessment and the project you would finish with. A mathematical machine-learning course, an applied conversion programme and a short workplace-skills class solve different problems. Ask what practical work is assessed, which tools are taught and what support is available when a student needs help. A certificate’s title alone does not establish the depth of the learning.
The government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan discusses infrastructure, data and skills as areas for action. Read a policy proposal as a proposal: it is not proof that every announced facility, training opportunity or job already exists. To explore London’s ecosystem, start with a problem or field and look for relevant institutions and teams. A fashionable postcode and an invitation to a networking event are not substitutes for useful work you can demonstrate.

No. Ofcom says its checker cannot report maintenance or current problems in your area. Check the provider’s service information separately from coverage or availability results.

Not by itself. It sets out recommendations and areas for action. Look for the responsible organisation’s implementation information before treating a proposal as an available service, course or job.
