A LONNOW editorial shortlist, not an official league table. We selected five options for their documented provision, dated Ofsted evidence and different local or admissions contexts. The numbers are a reading order, not quality scores. Grammar, faith and comprehensive routes are labelled where relevant. Every school is within Greater London.
Belleville received Outstanding across its March 2022 inspection judgements. It is a useful state-primary option for families based around Battersea, with a published age range covering nursery and primary years. A school visit should focus on the exact site and year group your child would join.
Before you decide
Confirm the relevant site, admissions arrangements and nursery-to-Reception process. Ask about wraparound care and the practical school-run route rather than judging the school only by its reputation.
Honeywell Junior is for ages seven to eleven, not a Reception-entry primary. Its July 2022 inspection recorded Good across the assessed areas. The separate junior identity makes it a relevant choice for families planning the next stage after infant education in the Battersea area.

Dulwich Hamlet Junior provides state education from seven to eleven in Dulwich Village. The March 2023 inspection awarded Outstanding overall and across the assessed areas. It is a useful comparison for families making a junior-school decision, especially alongside all-through primary options nearby.
Before you decide
Check junior transfer and oversubscription rules. It does not offer a Reception place, so families with younger children need to consider the infant stage separately.
Rosendale’s April 2024 inspection recorded Outstanding overall and in every assessed area. Its West Dulwich address can be confusing: the school is in Lambeth, which matters when checking admissions information. It provides a primary-age comparison with the separate junior schools in neighbouring Southwark.
Before you decide
Use the Lambeth admissions information and the current school policy. Ask about nursery, Reception and in-year entry separately and test the route from your actual address.
A primary choice with strong early-years judgements
Wimbledon Chase’s March 2024 inspection recorded Good overall, with Outstanding behaviour, personal development and early years. It broadens the south London selection beyond Battersea and Dulwich. The differentiated judgement is helpful for families choosing a first school rather than relying on a single label.
Before you decide
Check Merton’s entry-year allocation arrangements and any nursery application process. Ask how the school develops the curriculum and supports pupils as they move beyond the early years.

Read the determined policy for the intended entry year and recent allocation information.
A nursery place, an address nearby or a high entrance-test score does not necessarily guarantee admission. Junior schools covering ages seven to eleven are identified separately from Reception-entry primaries.
Check infant-to-junior transfer rather than assuming it is automatic.

Use the visit to test the fit
Ask who notices when a child is struggling, how additional learning needs are supported and what a normal week looks like.
Look at work, talk about homework and find out which clubs pupils can actually attend. Repeat the journey at school-run time.
Keep several realistic choices rather than treating any Top 5 as an offer list.
