LONDON GUIDE
Christmas Day in London: what’s open and how to plan
Make 25 December a local day built around a booked meal, a short outdoor route or a specific Christmas service—not a normal sightseeing timetable. This guide separates explicit 2026 listings, current annual closure rules and details still awaiting confirmation. Sources below were checked on 18 October 2026 for Friday 25 December 2026.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Make Christmas Day a local day
Keep Christmas Day close to where you are staying. Book a meal, choose one manageable walk or confirmed activity, and settle the return journey before adding anything else. For an essential airport trip, arrange exact-date transport rather than building around a train.
Your 3-step checklist
Tick these off as you plan. This list is not saved when you leave the page.
Choose the meal and the return journey first
Start with where you will sleep that night and how everyone will eat.
Ask your accommodation about its own dining arrangements, then compare a confirmed local booking with anything farther away. Check breakfast and the evening meal separately: a substantial Christmas lunch is not a plan for every other hour.
Save written confirmations, the full address and any dietary agreement. A short walk before or after the meal can make a complete day; a chain of attractions on opposite sides of London creates avoidable transport and timing risks.
Choose your Christmas outing
Start with the kind of day you want, then check the date, ticket and journey.
THE PLAN AT A GLANCE
A Christmas Day that stays together
Set the essentials first, then choose one local highlight from the checked options below.
- 01
Start at your base
Confirm where you will sleep and how your party will eat.
- 02
Choose one anchor
Keep a confirmed meal, service or booked activity at the centre of the day.
- 03
Add a nearby walk
Check weather, facilities and the journey back before adding distance.
- 04
Keep a fallback
An ordinary museum timetable is not a Christmas Day backup.

Christmas Day opening and planning decisions
A published programme is not a promise of available seats. Read the evidence label before making a booking or crossing London.
| Place or plan | Recorded position | How to plan | Sources and last checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Rail trains | Explicit 2026 confirmation: no services on Christmas Day. | Do not make a train-dependent day trip or airport transfer plan for 25 December. Commercial coaches and private transfers need a separate exact-date check. | Checked . |
| St Paul’s Christmas worship | Explicit 2026 programme: Eucharist 11:00–12:30; Evensong 15:00–16:00. Both free and unticketed. | Choose a service rather than expecting a sightseeing visit. Check current arrival and security advice; unticketed does not guarantee a seat. | Checked . |
| Hyde Park Winter Wonderland | Explicit 2026/27 season FAQ: closed on 25 December. | Choose another date for the fair. Walking in Hyde Park is a separate plan and does not grant event admission. | Checked . |
| National Gallery, Natural History Museum and Science Museum | Current annual visit rules: all three close 24–26 December. | Do not use these museums as Christmas Day rain backups. Their ordinary free-entry arrangements do not override the closures. | Checked . |
| Hyde Park outdoor walk | Standing year-round gate rule: 05:00 to midnight, subject to temporary closure notices. | Use a short route that returns to your base. Park access does not confirm the cafés, toilets or other facilities will open on Christmas Day. | Checked . |
| Osteria by Bocconcino, Covent Garden | Published 2026 Christmas Day menu: three courses £120 per person, plus a discretionary 13.5% service charge; listed service 12:00–19:00. | 366 Strand, WC2R 0JF. Confirm a table for your actual party, dietary needs, final charges and booking terms before treating lunch as arranged. | Checked . |
| Christmas Day Charles Dickens walk | Explicit 25 December 2026 listing: 14:00–16:00; £25 adult and £10 child. | London Walks meets by Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree and finishes in Covent Garden. Confirm space and suitability; allow your own journey to and from the meeting area. | Checked . |
| Westminster Abbey Christmas service details | Not confirmed here for 2026: the inspected Christmas service page still lists 2025 dates. | Check the Abbey’s current programme before planning entry. A Christmas service, sightseeing ticket and bell-ringing notice are not interchangeable. | Checked . |

Read an opening claim carefully
The comparison distinguishes a listing explicitly dated for Christmas 2026 from a venue’s current annual rule.
Neither means an unsold ticket or table is waiting for your group. Details marked unconfirmed should remain outside the fixed itinerary until the operator answers.
The Christmas season is also not the same as Christmas Day: an attraction can advertise a long festive run and close on 25 December. Check the exact date, branch, entry point and inclusion rather than relying on a seasonal photograph or an ordinary weekly timetable.
Getting around on 25 December
National Rail confirms no trains on Christmas Day 2026.
Visit London also advises that ordinary London public transport does not operate on the day. The detailed TfL Christmas timetable was not verified at this check; use its current travel information again before departure.
Separately operated sightseeing vehicles, commercial coaches and pre-booked cars are different products, not a substitute timetable you can assume will run. For an airport or essential journey, check the exact date, terminal, pickup point, luggage rules, fare and last leg to your accommodation.
Arrange both directions, not just the outward trip.
Choose an outdoor route near your hotel
Treat these as local areas to explore, not one compulsory route.
From Victoria or Westminster, keep the outdoor part around St James’s Park, Parliament Square and the riverside views that fit your return journey. From the West End, a shorter circuit around Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden or nearby streets can sit around a meal booking.
If staying by Bayswater or Hyde Park, a park walk avoids a cross-city transfer; check temporary notices and turn back while everyone is still comfortable. In the City or near London Bridge, choose one nearby river-facing stretch rather than walking to the West End simply to tick another sight.
No café, public toilet, bridge access arrangement or timed decoration display is guaranteed by these suggestions. Check the actual route and access needs from your door.
Services, a guided walk and the Christmas swim
St Paul’s has published two Christmas Day 2026 services: the Choral Eucharist at 11:00 and Festal Evensong at 15:00.
These are acts of worship, not general sightseeing sessions. For a different kind of afternoon, London Walks lists a 14:00–16:00 Dickens-themed walk starting at Trafalgar Square and ending in Covent Garden.
The Serpentine Swimming Club calendar lists the Peter Pan Cup at 09:00 on 25 December 2026; participation is restricted to members on its handicap list. Do not treat it as an invitation to swim.
Recheck the organiser before setting out, and do not combine an early park visit, a service and an afternoon walk without first allowing for the separate journeys, meals and rest.
Published Christmas Day meals, not guaranteed tables
Two central examples have specific seasonal information to investigate.
Osteria by Bocconcino on the Strand publishes a three-course Christmas Day menu at £120 per person, plus a discretionary 13.5% service charge, and a 12:00–19:00 service window. The May Fair Hotel lists its Christmas Day menu from £165 per adult and £70 per child, with lunch at 12:30–16:00 and dinner at 18:00–22:00.
These are recorded menu prices and windows, not live availability quotes or final bills. Ask about children’s age bands, supplements, drinks, allergies, pre-orders, deposits and cancellation conditions.
Choose the restaurant because it suits the group and the journey; there is little benefit in a distant reservation that leaves no workable way home.
Keep museums and festive attractions on another date
The National Gallery, Natural History Museum and Science Museum all publish 24–26 December closures in their current visitor rules.
Winter Wonderland’s 2026/27 information separately confirms a Christmas Day closure. Save those visits for a date on which the venue itself confirms entry.
An exterior view does not turn into an indoor visit, and a park being open does not make its ticketed events or refreshment facilities open. If you are considering a cruise or special bus tour, verify a Christmas Day ticket and the actual boarding point, accessibility, meal inclusion and cancellation terms with the operator; do not buy an ordinary sightseeing product and assume it covers 25 December.
With children, in rain, and on the days either side
Keep the outdoor portion short enough to reverse without relying on a bus.
Take water, suitable layers and the food or child supplies you would otherwise expect to buy on the way. Arrange a warm indoor part of the day through your accommodation or a confirmed booking rather than leaving a closed museum as the fallback.
If the weather or someone’s energy changes, dropping a walk is a sensible adjustment, not a failed Christmas. Check 24 and 26 December independently: early finishes, closures and limited rail services can affect those days too.
National Rail says many Christmas Eve services finish early and most operators have no Boxing Day service; some limited exceptions are still being finalised. Do not use a previous year’s last-train table for this trip.
Questions, answered
Is everything in London closed on Christmas Day?
No. The checked table includes specific worship, a guided walk and published dining options, alongside named closures. Do not generalise from one venue or assume ordinary weekly hours apply to another.
Can I travel by train on Christmas Day?
National Rail says there will be no National Rail services on 25 December 2026. A separately booked coach, sightseeing vehicle or private transfer needs its own exact-date check.
Can I visit a museum if it rains?
Do not use the National Gallery, Natural History Museum or Science Museum as a Christmas Day backup: their current rules close them on 24–26 December. Confirm any other indoor option directly.
Does a listed restaurant menu mean a table is available?
No. The menu and stated service window show the restaurant’s published plan, not remaining capacity for your party. Confirm the reservation, total charges, child and dietary requirements before paying.
Are St Paul’s Christmas services sightseeing visits?
No. They are worship services. Respect the congregation and follow the Cathedral’s admission and arrival guidance; free and unticketed does not guarantee a seat.
Should I book a tour or keep the day local?
Choose the option with a workable first and last journey. A nearby meal and short walk are a complete plan. A special tour can work when its exact date, pickup, finish and group requirements are confirmed.
