William and Dorothy Wordsworth moved into Dove Cottage in 1799 and lived there until 1808. The house gives the literary story a human scale: whitewashed walls, stone floors and limited space. Start with the rooms before looking out towards the landscape that surrounds them.
Dorothy deserves attention in her own right. Her writing and close observation are part of the creative life associated with Grasmere. The household also depended on the work of Mary Wordsworth and Sara Hutchinson; the story becomes fuller when it includes the people who sustained family and literary life.
