01 / THE PLACE BEHIND THE POSTCARD

The event that changed the destination

The cathedral’s story begins with Augustine in 597. But the event that transformed Canterbury into a major pilgrimage destination came much later: the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket on 29 December 1170. Four knights killed him inside the cathedral after his long conflict with Henry II.

Becket had once served the king as chancellor. Their relationship fractured after he became archbishop in 1162, amid disagreements over royal and church authority. Read the story as a struggle over power and allegiance, then visit the place of the murder. Its significance is easier to grasp once the people are more than names.

Pilgrims came in response to accounts of miracles attributed to Becket, who was canonised in 1173. The cathedral continued to witness other public dramas: Henry III married Eleanor of Provence here in 1236. Today, the movement between spaces lets you trace how worship, pilgrimage and royal ceremony shared one building.
