UK boarding schools for international students: admissions and fit

A boarding-school decision combines academic entry, pastoral care, guardianship, total cost and immigration permission. The famous name is only one part of the comparison.

01

Define the entry point

Schools may admit at 11+, 13+, 14+ or sixth form, with different registration dates and assessments. Ask about curriculum, subject availability, English support, reports, references, interviews and whether places are still genuinely available for the intended year.

02

Check sponsorship before relying on a visa

A child coming specifically under the Child Student route must have an unconditional offer from an independent school that is a licensed student sponsor. The school supplies a CAS only after its requirements are met; admission does not automatically guarantee a visa.

03

Understand boarding and guardianship

Compare full, weekly and flexible boarding, weekend routines, medical care, safeguarding, airport transfers and holiday arrangements. Schools may require an education guardian in the UK; verify the school’s policy and the guardian organisation’s responsibilities in writing.

04

Calculate the total annual cost

Tuition and boarding may exclude registration, deposit, uniform, devices, trips, exams, music, sport, guardianship, travel and insurance. Read notice periods and refund rules. Ask which extras are optional and which are normal for the child’s year group.

05

Judge life beyond results

Visit if possible and ask pupils how evenings, weekends and support actually work. Review inspection evidence, class size, staff continuity, university guidance, SEND provision and distance from the family’s UK contacts. A secure, suitable environment matters more than a league-table label.
