Rainy days in London: choose your indoor plan

Here is a fictional two-adult planning example, not a quoted visitor package.

Start with a £40 group budget. If both adults reach the November bus-and-tram daily cap of £5.55, allow £11.10 for that travel.

This tariff was checked on TfL’s bus-and-tram fare page on 1 November 2026. Set aside an illustrative £12 for food: £40 minus £11.10 minus £12 leaves £16.90 for everything else.

The £12 is an invented budget allowance, not a restaurant price. Fewer bus journeys may cost less; adding rail, an airport service or another transport product changes the calculation.

Do not treat a cap as a compulsory charge.

Before adding a paid exhibition, compare its actual full checkout cost with what remains.

Check the number of people covered, the date, entry window and cancellation terms. If the activity would consume the reserve, shorten the plan or choose the included collection instead.

An optional purchase should stay optional; there is no need to spend the remainder simply because it is available.

Decide what would make you change course: unavailable admission, an access problem, an unmanageable queue or someone needing a break.

Choose who checks the alternative and where the group can regroup. The fallback still needs its own current opening and entry check.

Do not pay twice just to keep an overfull itinerary intact. A shorter, affordable indoor visit can be the finished day, not a failed version of a larger plan.

Choose by the part of London you can reach comfortably, then by the group’s interest.

Science Museum suits a science-led outing; the V&A offers a design-led visit; the National Gallery offers paintings; Young V&A is the family creativity option. The time budgets above are LONNOW planning suggestions, not admission windows or a promise that you can see everything.

Keep one main destination and one nearby break.

The Science Museum is on Exhibition Road, London SW7 2DD.

Its visitor page lists free general admission with pre-booking, daily hours of 10:00–18:00 and last entry at 17:15. Historical note: the visitor information checked on 14 September recorded a Wonderlab closure on 14–18 September 2026.

That was a gallery-specific closure, not a closure of the entire museum, and those dates have passed. It does not establish present-day gallery availability; check the current official gallery page before booking an experiment-led visit.

The museum also lists construction-related noise, so check access information if a quieter visit matters.

The V&A lists free admission at Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL, with standard hours of 10:00–17:45 and Friday opening until 22:00.

Choose one interest, such as objects or design, and leave time to pause instead of trying to cover the whole building. General admission does not establish the price or availability of a particular exhibition.

Friday hours make this a possible evening option, but check the chosen gallery and date before travelling.

At Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN, the National Gallery lists free general admission and paid entry for some exhibitions.

Standard opening is 10:00–18:00, with Fridays until 21:00. Free advance tickets offer fast-track entry; walk-up entry is also available.

The main entrance is the Sainsbury Wing. Select a small number of paintings rather than racing through rooms, and check the current floorplan if seeing a specific work is essential.

Young V&A is at Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PA.

Admission is free; the V&A lists daily hours of 10:00–17:45, with galleries closing from 17:00. Leave time for children to settle and choose what interests them.

Treat the proposed 90-minute visit as a flexible family budget rather than a formal session. Check separately for any booked activity, exhibition or access arrangement that determines your day.

It does not cover transport, meals, paid exhibitions, special experiences or purchases. Before leaving, write down the amount available for the whole group, reserve any required admission and choose whether to bring food or buy it.

Verify each venue’s food rules before relying on a picnic indoors. A short visit without an extra paid activity can be a complete outing.

Use the exact address in TfL’s planner with your starting point and travel date. Check the station-to-entrance walking section, any interchange and both station and venue access information.

Do not assume the geographically nearest station gives the easiest step-free route. Allow a buffer for security and wet coats rather than treating a journey estimate as a booking guarantee.

If admission is unavailable, first look for another suitable option in the same area.

If the main activity requires booking, do that before arranging a meal. If the weather improves, add a short outdoor stop only after the indoor visit rather than turning it into another deadline.
