Which indoor London plan fits today?
Choose by the part of London you can reach comfortably, then by the group’s interest. Science Museum suits a science-led outing; the V&A offers a design-led visit; the National Gallery offers paintings; Young V&A is the family creativity option. Science Museum: separate the museum from paid experiences
The Science Museum is on Exhibition Road, London SW7 2DD. Its visitor page lists free general admission with pre-booking, daily hours of 10:00–18:00 and last entry at 17:15. Wonderlab is closed 14–18 September 2026; this is a gallery closure, not a closure of the entire museum. If experiments are the reason for travelling, choose another date and verify reopening before booking. The museum also lists construction-related noise, so check access information if a quieter visit matters.
V&A South Kensington: follow one theme
The V&A lists free admission at Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL, with standard hours of 10:00–17:45 and Friday opening until 22:00. Choose one interest, such as objects or design, and leave time to pause instead of trying to cover the whole building. General admission does not establish the price or availability of a particular exhibition. Friday hours make this a possible evening option, but check the chosen gallery and date before travelling.
National Gallery: a compact central option
At Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN, the National Gallery lists free general admission and paid entry for some exhibitions. Standard opening is 10:00–18:00, with Fridays until 21:00. Free advance tickets offer fast-track entry; walk-up entry is also available. The main entrance is the Sainsbury Wing. Select a small number of paintings rather than racing through rooms, and check the current floorplan if seeing a specific work is essential.
Young V&A: keep the family plan in east London
Young V&A is at Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PA. Admission is free; the V&A lists daily hours of 10:00–17:45, with galleries closing from 17:00. Leave time for children to settle and choose what interests them. Treat the proposed 90-minute visit as a flexible family budget rather than a formal session. Check separately for any booked activity, exhibition or access arrangement that determines your day.
How to make a genuinely low-cost day
Free admission covers the general-entry offer described here. It does not cover transport, meals, paid exhibitions, special experiences or purchases. Before leaving, write down the amount available for the whole group, reserve any required admission and choose whether to bring food or buy it. Verify each venue’s food rules before relying on a picnic indoors. A short visit without an extra paid activity can be a complete outing.
The wet-weather travel check
These are indoor destinations, not fully covered door-to-door routes. Use the exact address in TfL’s planner with your starting point and travel date. Check the station-to-entrance walking section, any interchange and both station and venue access information. Do not assume the geographically nearest station gives the easiest step-free route. Allow a buffer for security and wet coats rather than treating a journey estimate as a booking guarantee.
A simple plan B that does not cross the city
If admission is unavailable, first look for another suitable option in the same area. If the main activity requires booking, do that before arranging a meal. If the weather improves, add a short outdoor stop only after the indoor visit rather than turning it into another deadline.
