Open House or London Design Festival: choose your 12–13 September route
Both city-wide festivals begin on 12 September, but they reward different plans. Open House is about access to buildings; London Design Festival is about districts, installations and events.

The essential difference
Open House Festival organises thousands of architecture and city-space visits through listings, collections, neighbourhoods and a map. Some are drop-ins and others need free booking. London Design Festival distributes installations, exhibitions, talks, workshops, fairs and studio activity across 11 design districts and institutions.
Choose by booking tolerance
If one hard-to-access building is the reason for the day, begin with Open House and let its entry time control the route. If you prefer to browse and change direction, choose a London Design Festival district with several nearby listings. Free does not always mean walk-in, and a district label does not mean every event shares the same hours.
Choose by geography
Bankside can combine design activity with the South Bank and Tate Modern; Shoreditch supports a denser independent route; Soho works well with central theatre and food. For Open House, use the official neighbourhood filter and resist adding a distant building simply because it is available.
Choose by family and access needs
A family day needs toilets, food, seating and a realistic walking limit. Building access, lifts and quiet space vary by listing. Design installations may be more flexible but can still have queues, age guidance or sensory intensity. Read the exact venue information rather than relying on the festival-level description.
A resilient combined plan
Book no more than one fixed-time building in a half-day, add one nearby design listing and keep a free public-space fallback. Leave at least 45 minutes between separate venues even when the map makes them look close. This protects the day from queues, full rooms and transport disruption.
