Search for current availability
Use the NHS service search and contact practices directly because a listing does not guarantee that a dentist is accepting new NHS patients. Ask whether the practice is taking adults, children or both, and whether the offered appointment is NHS or private before agreeing to it.
Understand registration
Dentists do not use a permanent catchment-based registration system in the same way as GPs. A practice may offer a course of treatment without promising future availability. Keep the practice details and attend reviews at the interval recommended for your oral health.
Check charges before treatment
NHS dental treatment in England uses charge bands, while some patients qualify for free care or help with costs. Ask which band applies and request a written treatment plan where appropriate. Private treatment, optional upgrades and missed-appointment policies can be priced differently.
Get urgent help through the right route
For urgent dental advice, contact a dentist or use NHS 111 when you cannot reach one. Severe swelling affecting breathing, uncontrolled bleeding or major facial trauma may require emergency help. Do not use a hospital emergency department as a substitute for routine dental care.
Protect documents and payments
