Choose the channel by sector
General boards are useful for discovery, while NHS, Civil Service, TfL, City Hall and major education employers publish their own authoritative vacancy details. Search both, but apply through the employer route named in the advert.
Separate vacancies from training
A course, bootcamp or careers service is not a job offer. Use training routes to close a specific skills gap and ask for evidence of employer demand, assessment, cost and likely next step.
Read the complete advert
Check location, salary, hours, contract, closing time, essential criteria and work-permission wording. “London” can mean a wide commuting area; calculate the door-to-door journey before committing.
Apply safely
Never pay for an interview, sponsorship certificate or guaranteed job. Verify the employer, keep the original advert, tailor evidence to the criteria and submit through the stated official system.
Turn a title into three searches
Search the exact role, the underlying function and the strongest transferable skill. A digital editor might also search content operations, audience development or publishing product roles. Use exclusions to remove agencies, internships or locations that do not fit. Save a small number of precise alerts and review them on a fixed schedule so the search produces decisions rather than an endless feed.
Build a weekly application board
Separate opportunities into investigate, prepare, submitted, interview and closed. Each active card should contain the official vacancy URL, closing date, named criteria, salary range when published and the evidence still needed. This reveals where the process is failing: discovery, fit, application quality or interview conversion. Remove duplicates and expired adverts so the board reflects real choices.
Verify before sharing documents
Check that email addresses use the employer or recognised recruitment domain and that the vacancy exists on an official channel. Do not send passport scans, bank credentials, one-time codes or payment before a legitimate onboarding stage. Use a separate copy of identity documents only when the organisation explains the lawful purpose and secure route. Report suspicious adverts to the platform and the impersonated employer.
