FAMILY

Free London with kids: make a day of it

Pick one thing your children are curious about, leave room for a break and keep a simple backup. A satisfying short visit beats a whole-city checklist.

Start with the child, not the checklist

Choose a subject that already interests your family: a dinosaur, a painting, a machine or somewhere to play outside.

Then choose one main stop and a sensible time to leave. You do not have to turn a free afternoon into three museums.

The cards below separate ordinary admission from paid extras, and tell you when a free ticket is still worth arranging.

Keep the backup close

An outdoor walk and an indoor collection make different demands on your group.

Check the weather and the current venue notice before setting out, then save one nearby alternative rather than building a second full itinerary. Park gates can close early at dusk; museums may close individual galleries or restrict entry on particular dates.

A free price does not remove those practical limits.

Leave room in the budget

Travel, food, lockers, parking and optional activities can still cost money.

Decide together which extras are optional before reaching a queue. Bring what your family normally needs for a break and check the venue’s own food, bag and access rules.

The official links take you to each place’s own visitor information.

Questions, answered

Does free entry mean we do not need to book?

Not always. Read the booking field: Science Museum general admission needs a free booking, while several others recommend one to guarantee or prioritise entry. Group and activity rules can differ.

Are Young V&A’s free galleries open throughout October half-term?

Not on 29–30 October 2026: the official notice limits those dates to the Aardman exhibition and pre-booked half-term events. Use another ordinary free visit on those dates.

Can an adult visit Coram’s Fields alone?

No. It is a children’s park for under-16s, with no adult entry without a child. Booked clubs and other services have separate conditions.

Are all activities inside these places free?

No. Ordinary park or collection admission is different from a paid exhibition, playground-related activity, experience, sport booking, food or parking. Read the scope on each card.

What if the source check is old?

A review notice appears after seven London calendar days. Use the official page to confirm the date you want; the list is not live ticket inventory.
