Christmas Trees in London: Buying, Sizes & Care

A useful delivery offer should answer five questions: does it cover your postcode, which dates are available, what is the delivery charge, where will the driver leave the tree, and is a stand included?

For a block of flats, check whether delivery is to the building entrance or to your door. Tell the seller about access restrictions through its order process.

Office and building reception desks may have their own delivery hours. Do not treat “London delivery” as a promise of every borough, same-day service or installation.

Work backwards from the period when you want it on display.

The RHS says a well-cared-for cut tree can last around four weeks, although condition and indoor warmth matter. A living tree should spend a much shorter time indoors; RHS guidance recommends no more than 12 days.

If your celebration starts early, weigh the display period against the particular tree and the conditions in your room. Before committing to a delivery date, check that someone can receive it and that the stand is ready.

For a cut tree, the RHS advises removing about 2.5cm from the base before putting it in a water-holding stand.

Check the water daily and keep it away from direct heat. Follow the supplier’s advice for your tree.

Living trees need their own care plan and somewhere suitable to return outdoors. Do not assume a small pot will keep a tree healthy indefinitely.

Check your own borough’s Christmas tree collection or recycling arrangements when its seasonal service is announced.

Collection dates, accepted locations and preparation instructions differ. Remove decorations and follow the council’s instructions for stands, pots and netting.

A communal pavement or bin store is not automatically a collection point. Keep your order information so you can check any collection service you purchased; delivery and removal are separate services unless the seller explicitly includes both.
