01

What “best” means here

Department for Education data allows comparison of exam results, progress and other measures; Ofsted reports add inspection evidence. Results are shaped by intake and selectivity, so LONNOW does not present a mixed list of grammar, comprehensive and fee-paying schools as if they compete on identical terms.

02

State-selective schools to compare

Frequently high-performing grammar schools include Queen Elizabeth’s School, Barnet; The Henrietta Barnett School; Wilson’s School; St Olave’s Grammar School; Tiffin School; and Pate’s Grammar School. Entry normally depends on residence rules, age-specific application deadlines and selective tests—not academic results alone.

03

Independent schools to compare

Leading academic names include St Paul’s School, St Paul’s Girls’ School, Westminster School, North London Collegiate School, Brighton College and King’s College School, Wimbledon. Each sets its own entry points, assessments, interviews, references, fees, deposits and bursary process.

04

Read performance correctly

Check Attainment 8, Progress 8, English and maths outcomes, sixth-form results and destination data where applicable. A high attainment score shows results; progress measures ask how pupils developed from their earlier starting points. Small cohorts and changing admissions can make year-to-year comparisons unstable.

05

Admissions decide the realistic list

Catchment distance, faith criteria, sibling priority, grammar tests and independent-school assessments create very different routes. Read the determined admissions policy for the correct entry year, not an old forum answer. International families must also separate school admission from immigration permission.

06

Visit for the whole child

Ask about subject choice, SEND support, pastoral systems, behaviour, travel, homework load, co-curricular access and staff stability. The strongest statistical school can be the wrong environment for a particular child.
