Westminster: A Visitor’s Area Guide

Choose a reason to come

A working church, a royal palace and a gallery have different admission rules.

Choose the visit, not just the landmark on a map. Begin with the collection, historic interior or specific visit that matters to your group.

The details below separate ordinary hours from closures and free collection entry from paid extras. Pick one anchor, confirm its date and leave room around it; a neighbourhood works better as somewhere to spend time than as a set of distances to race between.

Visitor information checked . Read the individual guide for the exact admission, access and source notes.

Source review needed. This planning check is older than seven London days or unavailable. Older event checks are excluded below; verify current details with the linked organisers.

National Gallery

Editorial suggestion: choose a few paintings and a time you can enjoy, not a race through the whole collection.

Daily 10:00–18:00; Friday until 21:00. The current visitor page lists closure on 24–26 December and 1 January.

General collection admission is free; exhibitions and special events can differ.

Westminster Abbey

Editorial suggestion: choose a sightseeing date, not a service time as a substitute. Give the interior more than a gap between photo stops.

The visitor page lists 09:30–16:30, last entry 15:30; Saturday 09:00–16:00, last entry 15:00. Sunday is for services. Use the date calendar for exceptions.

Sightseeing is ticketed. Worship and sightseeing are different visits; check ticket inclusions and visitor categories.

Buckingham Palace

Choose the inside experience before arranging the day. Exterior viewing, a guard ceremony and a State Rooms ticket are three different plans.

From October to May, selected guided-tour dates only; starts are selected between 10:00 and 15:30. Summer 2027 dates are due to be announced in November, not confirmed here.

The current East Wing Exclusive Guided Tour advertises £100 per person. This is not the standard summer State Rooms ticket price.

A practical order for the day

Settle the arrival slot and access route before arranging a second paid visit.

If you need a step-free journey, check both the station and the building entrance; these are different parts of the day. Save the official arrival instructions, allow time for a break and keep the return journey in mind.

The nearby-food suggestions on the individual guides are starting points, not promises that a restaurant has a table.

Questions, answered

Are all local businesses checked here?

No. The dated checks cover the linked attractions and their published visitor information. Independent shops, cafés and local services have their own opening arrangements.

Should I book every stop?

Book the visit that needs it, then keep unbooked time around it. A free collection can still require or recommend a timed ticket.

Where can I compare more areas?

Use our neighbourhood guides and the London attractions hub rather than fitting several distant districts into one short afternoon.
