Choose your film and ticket time
The museum publishes weekday sessions at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30, and weekend sessions at 11:00, 12:15, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:15.
Individual films may have varying or unannounced dates: the film booking screen controls your appointment. Book a separate paid IMAX ticket and free museum admission.
Advance booking can cost less; compare the selected session total before paying.
Duration and arrival
Educational documentaries take 60 minutes including adverts.
The museum recommends arriving at the cinema ten minutes before the ticket time. Its 5+ guidance reflects the large screen, strong sound and 3D glasses; the individual certificate still applies.
Feature films have their own running times and age rules.
Access to the auditorium
The museum provides step-free access with staff assistance, four wheelchair spaces booked through its call centre, and hearing loops.
Educational films currently have no subtitles. Ask the museum to arrange any assistance before choosing a seat.
Turn the screening into a workable day
Make the film your fixed appointment and keep nearby museum time flexible.
Allow a toilet stop and enough time to find the auditorium before the screening. A familiar snack or a quiet break beforehand may help a child settle without needing to squeeze another activity into the same morning.
Check the experience, not only the rating
A U certificate does not tell you whether a child enjoys a large screen, loud sound or 3D glasses.
Read the current access information and ask about seating needs before paying. Science Museum IMAX in South Kensington and BFI IMAX at Waterloo are different cinemas: confirm the address on your ticket.
