BFI’s free film library: a South Bank research stop, with a 3 November closure

The Reuben Library offers a quieter film-related South Bank visit than a screening. Its books, journals and digital resources are open to everyone, but a specific closure affects early-November plans.

Plan the research, not just the seat

Bring a director, film, period or question to investigate.

The library is a reference resource: do not assume that a free visit means taking books home or accessing every item without advance preparation.

A date to avoid

The BFI currently says the library will be closed on Tuesday 3 November 2026 for venue hire.

It also reports intermittent terminal crashes. If a particular digital resource is essential, ask staff about the practical options before making a special journey.

Keep it distinct from a cinema booking

Library access and a ticketed screening are separate.

Check the normal opening information and any further notices on the official page. This article has not tested a terminal or confirmed the availability of an individual research item.
