What the LONNOW score means

This list covers five different London food traditions rather than pretending unlike dishes can be judged as one competition. The score is a transparent planning score out of ten. It weighs the strength and clarity of the restaurant’s proposition, menu usefulness, London location, transport options, reservation friction, price-to-occasion fit and the quality of official information. It is not a claim that LONNOW anonymously inspected every meal, and it never replaces the MICHELIN distinction or a current menu.

02

1. M. Manze Tower Bridge: what to order and how to get there

London classic · pie and mash. LONNOW decision score: 9.2/10. Best for: A traditional pie-and-mash lunch. Menu direction: Pie, mash and liquor; add eels only if you specifically want the historic East London tradition. Journey: Tube: Borough or Elephant & Castle. Bus: 42, 78 or 188 on the Tower Bridge Road corridor. The clearest first stop for understanding the pie-and-mash tradition. Go for heritage and speed rather than a long restaurant occasion. Open the restaurant’s own menu before travelling because dishes, prices, service times and dietary options can change.

03

2. Beigel Bake: what to order and how to get there

East London icon · salt-beef beigel. LONNOW decision score: 9.0/10. Best for: A fast Brick Lane food landmark. Menu direction: Salt-beef beigel with mustard and pickle; the hot beigels and bakery counter are the essential format. Journey: Overground: Shoreditch High Street. Tube: Aldgate East. Bus: 8, 26 or 388 to the Brick Lane/Shoreditch corridor. Best used as one stop in a Shoreditch and Spitalfields walk. Expect a queue, keep the pavement clear and treat opening details as changeable. Open the restaurant’s own menu before travelling because dishes, prices, service times and dietary options can change.

04

3. Poppies Spitalfields: what to order and how to get there

British classic · fish and chips. LONNOW decision score: 8.8/10. Best for: A central fish-and-chip meal. Menu direction: Choose the fish from the current board with chips; check portion size, sauces and service charge before ordering. Journey: Tube: Aldgate East or Liverpool Street. Bus: 8, 25, 205 or 254 to the Commercial Street/Aldgate side. A convenient introduction near Brick Lane and Spitalfields. It works best when the wider area is already in the day plan. Open the restaurant’s own menu before travelling because dishes, prices, service times and dietary options can change.

05

4. Regency Café: what to order and how to get there

London café · full English breakfast. LONNOW decision score: 8.7/10. Best for: An old-school breakfast or lunch. Menu direction: Build a full English from the current counter board, or choose a set breakfast; arrive prepared to order efficiently. Journey: Tube: Pimlico or St James’s Park. Bus: 24, 88 or C10 to the Westminster/Pimlico corridor. The appeal is the room, pace and traditional café ritual as much as the plate. Peak breakfast and lunch periods can be busy. Open the restaurant’s own menu before travelling because dishes, prices, service times and dietary options can change.

06

5. St. JOHN Smithfield: what to order and how to get there

Modern London classic · British cooking. LONNOW decision score: 8.6/10. Best for: Nose-to-tail British cooking. Menu direction: Look for the current roast bone marrow and parsley salad, then choose seasonal mains rather than assuming every signature is always available. Journey: Tube/rail: Farringdon. Tube: Barbican. Bus: 46, 55 or 63 to the Farringdon/Clerkenwell approaches. The most restaurant-led entry in this list and a useful bridge from London tradition to influential modern British cooking. Open the restaurant’s own menu before travelling because dishes, prices, service times and dietary options can change.

07

Use the top five well

Choose the meal first, then the transport. A destination tasting menu should be the day’s anchor; a quick local classic should sit inside a neighbourhood route. Save the precise branch and entrance, allow for the walk from the station, and keep a bus or step-free alternative. Check TfL on the day for disruption and the venue for late-arrival rules.

08

Allergies, access and current menus

Tell the restaurant about allergies and access needs before booking, not after arrival. Do not infer halal, vegetarian, gluten-free or allergen-safe preparation from the cuisine name. Menu examples on LONNOW explain the restaurant’s character; the official menu, price, cancellation policy and service charge are the final reference.
