Choose a role family
Front-office banking, research, risk, compliance, operations, accounting, actuarial work, insurance and fintech differ in daily work and recruitment. Start with tasks and skills, not a generic wish to work in finance.
Build credible evidence
Quantitative roles need analytical depth; client roles need communication and judgement; regulated work values precision and conduct. Use internships, projects, case competitions and qualifications to prove the relevant combination.
Understand credentials
A degree may be expected for some graduate routes, while apprenticeships and professional qualifications support others. CFA, accounting and regulatory credentials have specific purposes; do not collect them without a target role.
Search beyond famous banks
Asset managers, insurers, consultancies, exchanges, fintechs, regulators and financial teams inside non-finance companies all recruit in London. Smaller employers may offer broader responsibility.
Prepare for the process
Expect competency, technical, numerical and case-based stages depending on the role. Keep examples measurable, know the organisation’s business model and never exaggerate regulated or client-facing experience.
Choose the finance function
Investment banking, markets, asset management, insurance, accounting, compliance, risk, operations, data and financial technology recruit for different evidence. Start with the work performed on an ordinary day, not the prestige of the sector label. Read twenty real job descriptions and group repeated skills, qualifications and tools. This produces a more credible learning plan and prevents unrelated applications from weakening the search.
Build evidence outside the title
Demonstrate analysis, judgement and communication through a structured project using public company filings, market data or a process improvement. Explain the question, method, assumptions, control and result without presenting simulated work as employment. For regulated roles, understand which qualifications or approvals apply and who provides them. Networking should test understanding and reveal teams; it should not substitute for the advertised application route.
Compare compensation with the whole role
Base salary, bonus, pension, hours, location, qualification support and job security all affect the decision. A higher headline figure can be less valuable after commute, unpredictable hours or unrecoverable training costs. Ask when variable pay is determined and whether past figures are guaranteed—they usually are not. Never pay a recruiter for access to a vacancy and verify every employer and interview domain.
