01

Check the university and award date

The qualification must come from a university on the official eligible list and normally be awarded within the last five years. The list is tied to the date of award, so open the correct official edition.

02

Understand the annual limit

GOV.UK states that applications are subject to a yearly cap running from 1 November to 31 October. Availability must be checked when you are ready to apply.

03

Plan the time window

Permission normally lasts two years, or three for a PhD or other doctorate. It cannot be extended, and time on HPI does not count toward settlement on this route.

04

Use the flexibility carefully

HPI can allow work in most jobs, job search and self-employment, subject to conditions. Build a realistic plan to switch to another eligible route before permission expires if longer-term residence matters.

05

Check the award-year university list

Eligibility depends on the Global Universities List that applies to the month and year the qualification was awarded, not the institution’s current reputation. UK universities do not qualify for HPI. The qualification must meet the required level and normally have been awarded within the stated five-year window. Ecctis can assess the qualification level, but the applicant must still confirm that the university appears on the correct official list.

06

Plan around the route limit

HPI does not require a job offer and can permit work in most jobs, job search and self-employment, but it is time-limited and cannot be extended as HPI. Current official guidance says the permission normally lasts two years, or three years for a PhD or other doctoral qualification, and time on the route does not itself count toward settlement. Build the likely next route and employer conversation before the final year.

07

Recheck the live application position

The official overview now describes a yearly application limit running from 1 November to 31 October. Applicants should therefore confirm availability as well as qualification, English and maintenance evidence when ready to apply. Previous Graduate, HPI or Doctorate Extension Scheme history can prevent eligibility. This page is general information: use GOV.UK and regulated immigration advice for a decision involving refusals, dependants or switching restrictions.
