Why a ‘biggest supermarket’ list is unreliable
Retailers do not maintain a public, comparable London ranking by live selling-floor area, and branches are remodelled. A store described as the biggest in an old article may have fewer useful facilities than a closer Superstore. Tesco: use format and facility filters
Start with Tesco’s locator and choose Extra, Hypermarket or Superstore where available. Then apply the facility that changes the decision: accessible parking bays, petrol, EV charging, pharmacy, café, Click+Collect or toilets. The presence of one filter is not a promise that another exists. Save the precise branch, opening hours and entrance; ‘Tesco London’ is not a usable destination.
Sainsbury’s: compare Superstores near the route
Use Sainsbury’s official locator to shortlist large-format branches around home, work or the planned journey. Open each record to verify hours and facilities. A car-park symbol does not explain duration, validation, operator or event-day restrictions. If the basket is small, a local branch on the existing route may beat a distant Superstore once fuel, congestion and time are included.
M&S and a documented parking option
Westfield London is a useful large M&S starting point because the centre’s official material lists M&S across four levels and 4,000 spaces across three car parks. That does not make it the universal best choice. Check live tariffs, height restrictions, accessible bays and the shops required, then compare the journey with a local M&S or Westfield Stratford before crossing London.
Parking confidence has three levels
Dedicated customer parking confirmed by the branch is strongest. Shared retail-park parking needs signs and time-limit checks. A nearby map-labelled car park is only a lead until the operator, tariff, hours, height and walking route are verified. Blue Badge holders should check the specific site and borough rules. Never rely on a review photo or an old street-view image for enforcement conditions.
The public-transport alternative
Large stores can sit farther from stations and create an uncomfortable return with heavy bags. Compare a bus that stops close to the entrance, step-free station access and the final walk. Delivery or collection may be cheaper than a special car journey. Enter the full branch address in TfL Journey Planner and check the return route separately, especially on Sunday evenings.
