Colin Currie brings a new Steve Reich work to London

A London first, not the world premiere

The new work reaches London after its Edinburgh International Festival world premiere.

The concert begins the Colin Currie Group’s year-long celebration of Reich’s 90th birthday. That distinction matters when choosing what makes this date special: it is a first London hearing within a wider project, not an unsupported claim that the piece has never been performed.

The programme gives several ways in

Clapping Music offers an early example of Reich’s rhythmic thinking.

Radio Rewrite takes two Radiohead songs as a starting point; Double Sextet pairs instruments with their counterparts; Quartet brings together two vibraphones and two pianos. The programme places the new In All Your Ways beside these established works.

A listening experiment you can make your own

Choose one recurring sound to follow rather than trying to analyse everything at once.

Notice when another instrument appears to change its shape, then let your attention move elsewhere. That is an editorial listening suggestion, not an account of a rehearsal.

If you are coming with someone new to this music, compare what each of you noticed afterwards rather than treating prior knowledge as an admission requirement.

Choose the concert for the right reason

This is an ensemble programme built around one composer’s changing patterns and textures.

It is not advertised as a rock concert because one work draws on Radiohead. If your group mainly wants a singer-led set or a late-night dance floor, compare those formats before buying.

Being clear about the kind of evening prevents a familiar reference from creating the wrong expectation.

Book a Wednesday that has room around it

The current standard starting total is £39, shown as £35 plus a £4 transaction fee; the page did not establish remaining seats in our check.

Confirm the actual booking and access arrangements, then keep the rest of the evening simple. No exact finish is reproduced here.

For a workday visit, settle where to eat and how to get to Barbican Hall before adding optional earlier plans.
