Totally Thames Festival 2026: a practical London guide

Totally Thames fills September with arts, heritage, environmental activity and river experiences along London’s 42-mile stretch of the Thames.

A month along the river

Totally Thames is an annual September season rather than one event in one venue. The programme can include installations, performance, walks, talks, workshops, clean-ups and boating activity on, beneath and beside the river. Start with the date and part of London you want to explore.

02

Choose one river section

The festival corridor stretches far beyond Westminster and South Bank. A west, central or east London route keeps the day coherent and leaves room for the ordinary river landscape between events. Check which bank, pier or entrance the event uses before choosing the nearest station.

03

Free does not always mean unbooked

Many activities are free, but capacity, age guidance and advance registration can still apply. Boat trips, performances and workshops may have precise meeting times. Read the organiser’s listing, arrive early and keep the booking confirmation available offline in case riverside signal becomes unreliable.

04

Plan for river weather

Conditions beside the Thames can feel colder, windier or wetter than surrounding streets. Wear suitable footwear, carry a light layer and keep an indoor alternative nearby. For activity on the water, follow the operator’s safety instructions and never treat a festival listing as permission to enter the river independently.

05

Connect culture and transport

River buses can make the journey part of the day, but they use a different fare structure from ordinary buses and may become busy. Compare boat, rail and walking options separately. Check the final service if the programme continues into the evening.

06

Verify the day’s programme

Times, capacity and weather-sensitive activity can change. Use the Thames Festival Trust’s official 2026 schedule before travelling and follow the named event organiser for last-minute instructions. Build one flexible nearby option so a cancellation does not waste the journey.
